Patsy's Journey with Hickory Creek: A Story of Recovery and Independence
October 9, 2024
After a brief hospital stay, Patsy B. needed therapy to regain her strength and independence. Without hesitation, she chose Hickory Creek—and she's more than glad she did. Having been through our therapy program more than once, Patsy knew the transformative impact it would have on her ability to continue living independently in the community. Eager to begin therapy, Patsy arrived with clear goals, one of the most important being her desire to move into her own apartment.
For Patsy, Hickory Creek isn’t just a place for recovery; it’s family. "The people I’ve met and the friends I’ve made here mean so much to me," she says. One of the most rewarding experiences during her stay was helping other residents by taking meal orders and ensuring the kitchen received them—Patsy loved being able to lend a hand.
Her favorite activities at Hickory Creek included Bingo, cooking group, and gardening. "Before coming here, I never really had much interest in gardening, but thanks to an activity aide and a new friend I made, I learned so much and truly enjoyed it." Patsy also cherished the resident outings, especially the scenic bus rides and occasional Sonic milkshakes.
Now that Patsy has achieved her goal of moving into her own apartment, she’s enjoying life in the community—cooking at home, people-watching, and looking forward to hosting euchre games with her new neighbors. "The first meal I cooked in my new place was fried potatoes with a good slice of toast," she says proudly.
Reflecting on her journey, Patsy shares, "Without Hickory Creek, I wouldn’t have been able to maintain my independence, and for that, I am forever grateful. I look forward to my weekly visits back to see old friends and meet new ones."
